Lufthansa has opened its new Senator Lounge at Dubai International Airport which is open to First Class, Senator, Star Alliance Gold and HON Circle members.

But such are the space constraints at the 270sqm lounge, located at Gate 126 in Terminal 1, that regular business travellers aren't admitted and must use the Marhaba Lounge opposite instead.

Jurgen Marske, Lufthansa's Director Airport Services and Ground Operations for Southeast Europe, Africa & Middle East, expressed his disappointment at not being able to accommodate executives in the revamped lounge, which cost €1.3m and took three months to complete.

"We would have liked to double our surface space here, in order to accommodate business class travellers too, however no space became available."

The European carrier has made the best use of the available space, managing to squeeze in 68 seats, four workstation stools, four reclining chairs - facing a large panoramic picture of an A380 above the Alps - an eight-compartment locker and eight small dining tables next to the food & beverage area. Free wireless is available.

Peter Pollak, Lufthansa's UAE General Manager and Director Gulf, Afghanistan and Iraq, said it planned to introduce six-a-week direct services between Doha and Frankfurt from October, using a mixture of A330s and A340s.
